SIGN WRITING MASTERCLASSES
MASTER CLASS 1. INTRODUCING THE ESSENTIALS OF SIGN WRITING
I can come and visit your Degree course or Art Department for a one day master class teaching the essentials of sign writing. I like to introduce myself with an informal presentation, using a power point slideshow and/or we gather around a table to look at tools, materials and various artefacts used as part of the lettering process.
As an introductory exercise students can use the grid process to scale up a small piece of their artwork to large scale, a technique widely used for murals and supergraphics, this can be fun with rewarding results. Either bring in your own logo, lettering or reference from another source or I’ll have some references to use.
For those wanting to focus on letter forms, we can paint retro and vintage alphabets used in sign writing. During the workshops I’ll be able to demonstrate brush technique, how to load the brush and form letters in continual strokes, although this can take years to master its amazing what can be done in a day!
WHAT TOOLS AND MATERIALS WILL I BRING?
I’ll bring a selection of sign writing brushes and a range of water based paint colours.
I’ll have different surfaces for students to write on – mdf, plywood, melamine, acrylic and whatever else I’ve to hand. Artwork with grid overlays and full size line artwork for tracing off.
WHAT YOU CAN BRING
Brushes you think are up to sign writing, water based paint, surfaces you want to work and plenty of enthusiasm!
To go into deeper study, there’s enough here to cover three days classes if you want to get really confident at the craft.
MASTER CLASS 2.
USING OIL BASED SYNTHETIC ENAMEL PAINT, EMBELLISHING LETTERS, USING PALETTE AND RESTING STICK (OR DAUB)
I’m currently devising this master class.
